just a passing thought [25 Apr 2009|11:16pm]

[ mood | curious ]

i'm not very active on campus at all and i'm a sophomore, and i'm not entirely sure about the protocol in starting clubs... but i was wondering what people might think of a folklore/fairytale club? where people can read stories and/or tell them?

i don't know how well it would go over, but maybe i could get some feedback on if it's a somewhat decent idea or if they thought people would show up. i've always thought folklore was interesting, but maybe it's just me.

Calling All Romantics & Musical Theatre Fans! [04 Apr 2009|03:14am]

Open Circle Theatre presents Loves Me, Loves Me Not

Saturday, April 4 at 8 p.m. in the Huebeck Multipurpose Room

OCT shows the ups, downs, in-betweens and confusions stemming from romantic love in this musical theatre revue. Songs range from classic romances ("Guys and Dolls" created in 1955) to contemporary hits about real-life relationsihps ("Avenue Q" - 2003).

Enjoy some lovely and sweet songs with some sweets! There will definitely be sugary concessions available!

The cast (alphabetical order): Becky Bauer, Carolyn Crissey, Sara Crounse, Emily Davies, Becca Friedman, Mike Garman, Kate Hammond, Casey Lichtman, David Karpay, Jillian Merriwether de Vries, Stephanie Peter, Colin Riley, Emily Tumbleson, Becki Turner and Jen Wolfman.

Charlie Cohen, Hilary Davis, Sarah Noyovitz and Rosalind Wills are doubling as directors and performers, with directorial assistance from Margaret Weinert.

There is no charge, but donations to Open Circle Theatre will be accepted. We will charge for desserts. Leave comments if you have any questions.

OCT hopes to see you at this romantic, fun, song-filled evening!

anyone want to recycle a computer? [15 Feb 2009|12:13am]

Does anyone have any broken (and irreparable) laptops that they were thinking of recycling?  I'm an artist of sorts and would really like to use a motherboard or laptop shell as a sort of canvas for a painting.  If anyone would be willing to donate a dead laptop, I'd really appreciate it.  Just send an email to Rachel Stark (you can find me on the Goucher server) or leave me a comment here.  I am happy to repay you in candy, favors and eternal devotion!

Fight for Equality in Maryland by eating, drinking, and listening to music! [07 Jan 2009|03:29pm]

[ mood | excited ]

Hello world.

Please click on the link below:

My brother Steve is hosting this kick-ass fundraising event for Equality Maryland. Wooo equal rights! It's going to have a cocktail hour with a silent auction, *OPEN BAR* and hors d'oeuvres, and a ton of live local music, including Goucher's very own Red Hot Blue! For all that (and for a great cause) tickets are only $40. For a fundraiser with so much awesome, that's a sexy ticket price. The event will be held by The Creative Alliance at the deliciously cool venue The Patterson theatre in Baltimore, on Saturday, January 31st.

I would love to see some Goucher faces supporting the cause and having a fabulous time :)

Musical Director Needed for Theatrical Revue! [02 Jan 2009|12:06am]

Hey all! Happy New Year! I hope you all are having a fabulous winter break.  Things are really getting in gear for the spring musical revue.  The theme, as I said in a former e-mail, is "S/he Loves Me, S/he Loves Me Not."  (The whole "S/he" thing may be edited out or whatever.) Well, our musical director, Roz Wills, needs help in the form of another musical director!  Please contact her at rosalind.wills@goucher.edu.  Also, contact Sarah Noyovitz at sarah.noyovitz@goucher.edu.  I also believe Charlie Cohen is helping Miss Sarah N. with the artistic side (charles.cohen@goucher.edu).  Please e-mail them if interested!

Also, if anybody has ideas for songs in the revue, as well as a location, shoot those kids -mail as well.  We probably won't have it in Dunnock, because that is just absolutely crazy in the Spring.

Your input/assistance would be hugely appreciated!

two awesome opportunities for writers and artists! [13 Nov 2008|02:25pm]

Hey Goucher students, faculty and staff members!  Check out these great calls for submissions:

The Preface

Do you write poetry, prose, plays or comics? Are you an artist, designer or photographer? If so, then submit your best work to The Preface, Goucher's literary arts magazine! We are currently accepting and reviewing submissions for the Spring 2009 edition.

The priority deadline for submissions is Saturday, November 15th, but don't worry - you can still submit your work up until the secondary deadline, December 6th. You can find all the information you need for submitting here.  Be sure to click the links on "Art," "Poetry" and "Prose" to see the specific guidelines for each category, and please follow them exactly. We look forward to reviewing your submissions!

Where the Lens Ends

Are you a darkroom photographer? If so, then submit your work to the Art Department's 3rd annual gallery show and photo auction, Where the Lens Ends! The auction is a great opportunity to showcase your work while contributing to a great cause. This year's charity is Art with a Heart (http://www.artwithaheart.net/).

Submit your 8 x 10, black and white, darkroom-processed prints to the box in the Meyerhoff Arts Center office (on the second floor, next to the elevator) by December 5th! No more than two submissions per person, please.

For more information, please email myself, Melissa Weiss or Marlo Tersigni.

Sorry, we cannot currently accept digital prints (but The Preface would love to have them).

Thanks, everyone,
Managing Editor, The Preface
Co-Chair, Where the Lens Ends

Goucher gets a mention on ESPN.com [15 Oct 2008|09:53am]

Well, their Page 2 page anyway.

It's in this week's "Tuesday Morning Quarterback" column written by Gregg Easterbrook (who also writes for The Atlantic Monthly). Scroll all the way to the end to the "Reader Animadversion" section (next to the picture of the Jets cheerleader). In response to a previous column, a reader writes, "That means the [University of Texas] system has $82,000 in endowments per student, a number similar to Goucher College."

No mention of the Landmark Conference or the hilariously awesome "Fear the Gopher" logo, but we'll take what we can get.

jobs in towson [08 Sep 2008|09:56pm]

I've been looking around for part time jobs off campus, i know Jo Ann's fabrics is looking for people, and I'm filling out an application, but i was wondering if anyone knew about some other places that are looking for help that won't mind me going away for winter break. That's the only thing I've been really worried about, it almost seems pointless to get a job for 2 and a half months then leave. :-/
